World Cup Record: Won 1998, Runners-up 2006, Semi-Finals 1982, 1986
Manager: Raymond Domenech
Key Player: Franck Ribery
Qualified: European Qualification Play-Offs
Odds: 12/1
After coming close with semi-final appearances in the 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals Les Bleus had to wait until 1998 to finally lift the trophy when they beat favourites Brazil on home soil in Paris. Then despite a lacklustre tournament they managed to reach the final in 2006 – eventually losing on penalties to Italy. That final will always be remembered for Zinedene Zidane’s acrimonious sending off and which effectively ended a glittering international career. Their qualification for the 2010 finals has also caused a stir and put France back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Thierry Henry has put what could be an indelible blemish on his good name by handballing twice before setting up William Gallas to score the goal that took France to South Africa beating Ireland in their European Play-Off tie. While current coach Raymond Domenech has mystified many ex-players and fans with his selections. All this said France with their host of world stars and Gallic passion would be missed in any major tournament and if they are focused can beat any team on their day.
Franck Ribery
Age: 26
Position: Winger
Club: Bayern Munich (Bundesliga)
Caps: 41 (7 goals)
Ribery began his career at Boulogne but it was after joining Marseille in 2005 that he came to prominence. After 60 appearances for the Southern French club he moved to his Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. However, speculation continues that he will leave the Munich as interest from many of Europe’s top clubs builds. Zinedine Zidane described Franck Ribery as ‘the jewel of French football’. High praise indeed. If France is going to compete in this World Cup they will need Ribery at his best. An energetic playmaker with skill and the ability to split defences he can score goals and has strong defensive awareness.
